Nothing makes a good story like a mysterious hero who shows up with no backstory. An old man in the desert who turns out to be a Jedi; a foul looking Ranger at a roadside inn who is heir to the throne of Gondor; the man with no name riding in to save a town. The Bible has several mysterious heroes that show up at different times as well. But here in Genesis 14 we come face-to-face with one of the most mysterious yet significant figures in biblical history; a mysterious priest king named Melchizedek. Not only is his name fun to say, Melchizedek is mentioned here in Genesis, again by King David in a Psalm about Jesus, and again by the writer of Hebrews in the New Testament. It turns out that this shadowy figure points us to the greatest truth in the Bible; he points us to Jesus.
