No one likes to be unseen. At times we can feel unseen by others, and at times we can feel unseen by God. In Genesis 16 we continue the story of faith of Abraham and Sarah, and we also get to meet one of my favorite people in the Bible: Hagar. Hagar was a foreigner and a slave, used and mistreated, with seemingly no one to see her or defend her or to plead her cause. Until she becomes the first person recorded in Scripture to be visited by the Angel of the Lord, which most scholars associate with the presence of God Himself. And she is the only person in Scripture to explicitly ascribe a descriptive, personal name to God; she names God: El-Roi in Hebrew which means, The God Who Sees Me. How did Hagar go from feeling unseen by God and others to praising God as the God who truly sees and knows her? Join us this morning in Genesis 16.
