All Scripture is profitable for our lives, even, and maybe especially, the passages like this that seem to talk about something we don’t understand. As we go through the book of Genesis together, what does circumcision, the cutting away of the male foreskin, have to do with what the Bible is about? But in fact, our passage in Genesis 17 this morning is so important to the message of the Bible that it is referred to over two dozen times in the New Testament alone. Mary includes it in her song when Jesus’ birth was announced; Zechariah includes it in his prophecy when John the Baptist was born; Paul writes about it, the author of Hebrews writes about it, and others. Genesis 17 is a vital chapter to understanding the good news of the Gospel and for understanding our unchanging covenant relationship with God.
